Why Fertility Struggles Often Have a Whole-Body Component — and What Chinese Medicine Offers
Fertility is the outcome of many systems working together — hormonal balance, uterine lining quality, egg and sperm health, circulation to the reproductive organs, stress regulation, and thyroid function. When any of these systems are disrupted, conception becomes harder even when standard tests return normal results. Chinese medicine has a detailed diagnostic framework for evaluating reproductive health that considers the menstrual cycle as a monthly report card on overall health. By identifying and treating the patterns that underlie poor fertility, we aim to create the optimal physiological conditions for conception.
Our Approach: We recommend a minimum of 3 months of pre-conception treatment for the best results — this aligns with the egg maturation cycle. For IVF support, we time treatment phases to coincide with stimulation, transfer, and the two-week wait. We coordinate with your fertility specialist.
Your Treatment Timeline
- • Weekly acupuncture throughout the menstrual cycle
- • Cycle-phased herbal medicine tailored to each phase (follicular, ovulatory, luteal, menstrual)

Do’s and Don’ts
Do
- ✅ Start pre-conception treatment at least 3 months before your planned IVF cycle
- ✅ Inform your fertility specialist that you are receiving acupuncture
- ✅ Maintain a warm lower abdomen — avoid cold drinks and sitting on cold surfaces
- ✅ Prioritise sleep — reproductive hormones are produced and regulated during deep sleep
- ✅ Reduce alcohol and limit caffeine to one cup daily during pre-conception preparation
Don’t
- ❌ Don’t start intense new exercise programs during IVF — moderate, gentle movement is better
- ❌ Avoid exposure to chemicals and plastics where possible — they disrupt hormonal balance
- ❌ Don’t use herbal supplements without checking with your practitioner — some are contraindicated in IVF
- ❌ Avoid excessive heat such as saunas or hot baths for men — heat reduces sperm quality
- ❌ Don’t carry the fertility journey alone — emotional support is as important as physical treatment
Frequently Asked Questions
When should I start acupuncture if I am doing IVF?
Ideally, start 3 months before your planned cycle to maximise egg quality and uterine health. If you have less time, even 4–6 weeks of pre-cycle treatment is beneficial. We also provide treatment on or around the day of embryo transfer, which has the strongest research evidence.
Can acupuncture help if I have PCOS?
Yes. PCOS is one of the conditions where Chinese medicine has the most evidence. Acupuncture has been shown to regulate LH:FSH ratios, improve insulin sensitivity, and restore ovulation in women with PCOS.
Can my partner receive treatment too?
Absolutely. Male fertility — sperm count, motility, and morphology — responds very well to acupuncture and herbal medicine over a 3-month period. We recommend both partners receive treatment simultaneously for the best outcome.
Is acupuncture safe during the two-week wait?
Yes. Post-transfer acupuncture is specifically designed to support implantation and is safe during the two-week wait. We use gentle, supportive protocols that avoid any needles that might stimulate uterine contractions.
Can you help after recurrent miscarriage?
Yes. Recurrent miscarriage is often related to immune factors, clotting issues, hormonal imbalance, or uterine health — all of which Chinese medicine can address. We work alongside your specialist to support investigation and treatment of the underlying cause.
Does Chinese herbal medicine interfere with fertility medications?
Some herbs should be avoided during IVF stimulation — your practitioner will adjust your formula accordingly. We always coordinate herbal prescriptions with your IVF protocol and inform your fertility specialist of anything we are prescribing.
