Constipation Treatment Perth | Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine

Constipation can mean infrequent bowel movements, difficult passage, hard stools or a persistent sense of incomplete emptying. The pattern may shift with routine, hydration, medicines, illness, stress and activity. Our DIGEST framework considers Drive (the energy and rhythm supporting movement), Waterway (comfortable moisture and fluid handling) and Pressure (tension or a backed-up feeling). These are pattern-based observations, not medical diagnoses, and they are used alongside appropriate GP or gastroenterology care.

Drive
Frequency is only one part of the picture — energy and rhythm supporting movement also matter.
Waterway
Stool texture, hydration and comfortable moisture shape how passage feels.
Pressure
Straining, incomplete emptying and a backed-up feeling deserve attention.

A gentle pattern view: Drive supports rhythm, Waterway supports moisture and Pressure describes tension. Comfortable bowel rhythm depends on movement, moisture and pressure working together.

Usual advice vs what often helps more

DIGEST lensUsual adviceOften more useful
DriveFocus only on frequencyHave routine, movement, appetite or energy changed at the same time?
WaterwaySimply add more fibre or waterWhat are the stool texture, hydration pattern and effects of current medicines?
PressurePush harder and waitIs there straining, incomplete emptying, bloating or stress-related tension?

60-second self-check

This screen helps organise a clinical conversation; it is not a diagnosis.

  1. Has your usual bowel frequency or stool texture changed?
  2. Do you strain or regularly feel incompletely emptied?
  3. Did symptoms begin after a medicine, illness, travel or major routine change?
  4. Have basic measures stopped helping or become something you rely on?

New, severe or persistent constipation, especially with pain, bleeding or other concerning changes, needs medical review.

Supporting Research

Evidence for acupuncture in functional constipation is mixed, and certainty varies across studies. Some trials report changes in bowel frequency or symptom scores, but methods and comparison groups differ. Chinese herbal medicine has also been studied as a broad category; preparations and study quality vary. This page does not list products, prescribe a bowel protocol or claim superiority over standard care.

Acupuncture and pattern-based care may be considered as supportive options for some people after relevant causes and medicines have been reviewed. Individual results vary.
