PMS Treatment Perth | Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine for Premenstrual Syndrome

PMS can bring a recurring cluster of mood changes, bloating, breast tenderness, fatigue and pelvic discomfort in the days before a period. The experience is real, but it is not identical for everyone. Our DIGEST framework considers Drive (cycle energy and warmth), Waterway (the sense of fluid retention or puffiness) and Pressure (tension affecting mood, sleep and pelvic comfort). Pattern-based care is complementary and should sit alongside GP or gynaecology care when symptoms are severe, new or disruptive.

Recurring timing
Look for symptoms that reliably build before bleeding.
Whole pattern
Mood, sleep, bloating and pain may travel together.
Support varies
Short-term study findings are mixed and individual results differ.

Idea in one picture

PMS cycle concept showing premenstrual mood, bloating and pelvic discomfort moving toward a calmer and steadier week
A pattern view of PMS: cycle energy, fluid sensation and pressure may overlap. The premenstrual week may feel steadier when cycle Drive, Waterway puffiness and mood Pressure are considered together.

Usual advice vs what often helps more

DIGEST lensUsual adviceOften more useful
DrivePush through pre-period fatigueCould earlier pacing, sleep regularity and steadier meals reduce the monthly energy dip?
WaterwayFocus only on saltDo bloating, breast tenderness and a puffy feeling form part of the same cycle pattern?
PressureDismiss it as “just hormones”How much do mood, sleep and pelvic tension affect daily function?

60-second self-check

Use these questions to notice timing and impact. This is a screen only, not a diagnosis.

  1. Do irritability, low mood or emotional sensitivity reliably build before your period?
  2. Do bloating, breast tenderness or pelvic discomfort occur in the same window?
  3. Is sleep or daytime energy noticeably different before bleeding begins?
  4. Does the monthly pattern interfere with work, relationships or usual activities?

Marked mood change, severe pain or major functional impairment deserves prompt medical assessment.

Supporting Research

Evidence for acupuncture in PMS-related mood, pain and bloating is mixed but often encouraging. Studies differ in design, comparison groups and outcome measures, so certainty remains limited for some findings. Chinese herbal medicine has also been studied as a broad category, but preparations and study quality vary. This page does not claim equivalence or superiority to medicines and does not list individual products.

Acupuncture and pattern-based care may be considered as supportive options for some people. Medication changes remain with the prescribing clinician. Individual results vary.
